RWA token basics

What Is a Permissioned RWA Token?

A permissioned real-world-asset token uses rules around who may hold, receive, or transfer it. The controls can be implemented through on-chain logic, platform procedures, or both, and they can make the token behave very differently from an unrestricted cryptocurrency.

Permissioning connects ownership to eligibility

A holder or receiving wallet may need identity review, wallet-ownership verification, jurisdiction checks, sanctions screening, and continuing approval. Passing one check does not establish every other requirement.

Transfer controls have practical consequences

A token may reject a transfer to an unapproved wallet, be subject to a lockup, or require an approved venue. These controls can support compliance and recordkeeping, but they can also limit the ability to move or sell a position.

Tokenization does not create liquidity

Even where a transfer is allowed, there may be no buyer, market maker, redemption right, quoted price, or immediate settlement. A permissioned RWA token can involve significant liquidity and principal-loss risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can a permissioned RWA token be sent to any wallet?

Not necessarily. The sender and receiver may both need to meet current rules, and a lockup or other restriction can still apply.

Does permissioning guarantee compliance or liquidity?

No. Controls may support a process, but they do not guarantee a token’s value, a buyer, regulatory outcome, or a successful transfer.
